Common Faucet Problems
Kitchen faucets take more daily use than almost any other fixture in the home, and they develop predictable failure patterns over time:
- Dripping spout: The most common kitchen faucet complaint. In single-handle faucets, this typically indicates a worn cartridge or ceramic disc. In two-handle faucets, a worn washer or O-ring is the usual cause.
- Leaking at the base: Water pooling around the base of the faucet body typically indicates worn O-rings in the faucet body itself – a repair that requires removing the faucet.
- Reduced flow: Mineral buildup in the aerator is the most common cause of reduced kitchen faucet flow. Cleaning or replacing the aerator often restores full flow, but if the issue persists, the supply valve or internal components may be involved.
- Stiff or difficult handle operation: Mineral deposits on internal cartridge components cause handles to become increasingly difficult to move.
- Sprayer problems: Pull-out and pull-down kitchen sprayers develop issues with their internal diverter valves and hose connections over time.
Kitchen Drain Cleaning
Kitchen drains are particularly prone to grease accumulation. Even when you’re careful not to pour grease directly down the drain, cooking fats, oils, and proteins coat the interior of drain pipes gradually. Combined with food particles, dish soap, and other organic material, this builds into a stubborn accumulation that reduces flow and eventually causes complete blockages.
Standard drain snaking addresses immediate clogs but doesn’t remove the grease film from pipe walls. Hydro jetting is often the preferred solution for persistent kitchen drain problems, as it scours the interior pipe wall completely – removing not just the clog but the conditions that cause clogs to keep returning.
Chemical drain cleaners should be avoided in kitchen drains. They’re often ineffective against grease buildup, and their corrosive action can damage older pipe materials.
Garbage Disposal Repair & Replacement
Garbage disposals are mechanical appliances that fail in predictable ways:
- Motor hum with no grinding: The grinding plate is jammed. This is often resolvable by using the reset button and the manual rotation key that comes with most disposals.
- No sound at all: The disposal may have tripped its thermal overload. The reset button on the bottom of the unit is the first step.
- Leaking from the bottom: Water leaking from the bottom of the disposal housing typically indicates internal seal failure, which usually means replacement is more practical than repair.
- Leaking where the disposal connects to the sink: The mounting flange or gasket at the top of the disposal may need to be tightened or replaced.
- Insufficient grinding performance: Worn grinding components in older disposals eventually lose effectiveness. If the disposal is more than 10-12 years old and underperforming, replacement is typically the right choice.
